Description
Bumblebee on Spring Blossom Unframed Mezzotint, Collagraph, Stencil and Hand Tinting. Limited Edition of 60. Plate size: 14cm x 14cm.
Bumblebee on Spring Blossom is a Mezzotint which is an engraving technique developed in the seventeenth century. This method allows for the creation of prints with soft gradations of tone and rich and velvety blacks. The process involves indenting the metal printing plate by rocking a toothed metal tool across the surface. Each pit holds ink, and if printed at this stage the image would be solid black. However the printmaker creates dark and light tones by gradually rubbing down or burnishing the rough surface. This gives various degrees of smoothness to reduce the ink-holding capacity of areas of the plate.
Louise has been printmaking from her studio in Norfolk for over 25 years. During her degree course in Fine Art, she became fascinated by bees and her interest has continued until this day. Her work has been exhibited widely across the UK, most notably at ‘The Society of Wildlife Artists annual show, London, and the Affordable Art Fair, London and New York. Currently her subjects have broadened to include other insect species, plants and birds. She enjoys using a variety of print techniques, most notably mezzotint, which involves a great deal of time and patience.
