Shells & Seaweed I Screen Print is a form of stencil printing, using a screen made from fabric stretched tightly over a frame. The non-printing areas of the fabric are blocked out by a stencil. Created by painting on glue or lacquer, by applying adhesive film or paper, or painting a light-sensitive resist onto the screen.
Ink or paint is then forced through the open fabric with a rubber blade, known as a squeegee, onto the paper. Also known as silkscreen printing which came from when silk was originally used as the fabric/mesh.
Louise Boulton studied BA(Hons) Scientific Illustration at Middlesex University and has produced various designs & illustrations for book and magazine publishers. Whilst working for these publishers, building on her skills in observational drawing she developed her own practice as a printmaker in the West Country. Often starting with preparatory drawings undertaken at botanical gardens & museums, they are then developed in the printmaking studio into hand printed etchings and screen prints. Louise aims to record the beauty in nature, combined with decorative qualities, resulting in a contemporary feel. She has exhibited her artwork at Trebah Gardens, Cornwall, University of Bristol Botanic Garden & William Morris Gallery, London. Alongside her practical work she has lectured in Graphic Design & Illustration at The London College of Communication and The London College of Fashion.
